A Guide to New Zealand Wine - 2004
All pinot noir, sold in 500ml
bottles for two people on a balmy summer night. Very nice too,
fairly dry, nicely soft, well balanced and user-friendly wihtout
being 'commercial'. Ready.

The last of the summer roses and one
of the best. Made from pinot noir grapes grown in Martinborough,
this is a mouthful of sweet berry fruit with enough acidity to
prevent it from being cloying. Chill well and drink before the
end of Autumn.

Martinborough Vineyard entering
the fray in 2003 with a 500ml bottle-for-two filled with an ample,
pleasantly spiced, medium-dry, berry/cherry wine made from pinot
noir grapes.

... The
other wine that I'm impressed with is the pretty 2003 Rose' from
Martinborough Vineyard. In many ways, it's the ideal style of wine
for the summer season. We've seen a resurgence is rose', and I
think people are rediscovering how these wines are so versatile
with the lighter and fresher food that we tend to eat at this time
of year. This rose', made from pinot noir has plenty of ripe, soft
fruits and berry flavours that shout "pinot".
The concentration is sufficient to enable it to accompany more
flavoursome food, but the fresh acidity keeps it crisp and zippy
as a thirst quenching drink in its own right. I'm not too sure
whether they got the 500ml bottle size right. I'd personally prefer
it in 1 litre bottles as it's so drinkable!

Martinborough winemaker Claire
Mulholland's 2003 rose' is even better this year than last. Made
from pinot noir grapes grown on young vines, it taste of soft, sweet
strawberry flavours with a nearly bone-dry finish. I cannot think
of a better reason to drink a rose' - try this wine with Rose-scented
Turkish Delight.

The best you CAN buy:
... Searching for a superior summer sipper for those lazy, hazy
days relaxing on the deck? Look no further than Martinborough
Vineyard's 2003 Rose' ($15.95 The Mill) cleverly pesented in
a "perfect for two" 500ml bottle. With its enticing
cherry aromas and gentle berryish flavours, it's full of drink-me-now
appeal.
Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2004
This ranks amoung the country's
finests Rose's. Ensconced in a 500ml bottle ('designed for two'),
the pink/light red 2003 vintage (êêêê 2/1)
was made from Pinot Noir grapes grown in Martinborough, fermented
in tanks and drained from its skins after 24 hour's contact. Smooth,
with strong rasberry, cherry and spice flavours woven with fresh
acidity, it shows good body and richness. Great drinking during
the summer of 2003-04.

This is seriously delicious and even
better than last year's version. I love it intensly.
The first time
wine maker Claire Mulholland made this rose', it was to use pinot
noir grapes that were deemed of not high enough quality to go into
the pinot noir. This soft and fresh take was an overnight sensation
and Mulholland is committed to making it every year. This year's
has tasty black cherry and sweet strawberry flavours. This is a fantastic
drink-me-now wine.

... is another delicious rose,
with some of the perfumed, cherry, berry hints of pinot noir from
which it is made. Beguilingly rich in the mouth, it is best lightly
chilled - serve it too cold and it looses its character.

Fairly sweet, weighty palate, rich
in berryfruit flavour. "How
can Rosé get better?" asked Christine. Stephen was
similarly admiring. "Serious... vinous... rosé for
red wine drinkers." ****
