riesling 2002 reviews

Peter Saunders
A Guide to New Zealand Wine - 2004

Martinborough Vineyard Jackson Block Riesling 2002. Just off dry, a good year, some lime-citrus and river stone characters starting out and should mature nicely into a rich yet complex riesling. Serious wine: look forward to 2005-07.

****1/2
Finely scented and tautly structured single-vineyard wine, grown in the Jacksons Block, near the winery. Full of promise, with incisive lemon/lime flavours, fresh, vibrant and tangy, and a dryish finish. Open mid 2003+.

2002 Martinborough Vineyard Jackson Block Riesling
A fresh, racy, bubblegum nose but less lively in the mouth. Quite commercial in style; light, sweet and elegant with a clean finish.

Martinborough Vineyard Jackson Block Riesling 2002 is deliciously zesty and fresh with ripe nectarine overtones and a lively, tingling finish. It will develop with a couple of years bottle age.

Although long overshadowed by the famous Pinot Noirs, this is one of the jewels of the Martinborough Vineyard range. Full of promise, the 2002 (****1/2) is bright, light lemon/green, with a scented bouquet. It's a tightly structured wine, fresh, vibrant and tangy, with incisive lemon/lime flavours and a dryish (eight grams/litre of sugar), lingering finish. Open mid-2003+

'Martinborough and Pinot'

Really floral nose that oozes lime, musk stick and lavendar. A restrained palate of finely woven slate, chalk, lime leaf and crisp acidity. Finishes long and with determination. Brooding power and mellifluous across the palate. One of the best Martinborough Rieslings tasted and it will age magnificently over the next decade

Fresh and moderately concentrated Riesling with slightly spritzig characters. Good texture, flavour cncentration and length. A stylish and delicate wine with a sustained finish.
