Martinborough Vineyard Jackson
Block Riesling 2004. This is one of the jewels of the Martinborough
Vineyard range. The 2004 vintage (****) is based on 15 year-old
vines in Bernie and Jane Jackson's vineyard, just 'around the corner'
from the winery. Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed and stop-fermented
with 5 grams per litre of residual sugar, making it an off-dry
style, it has intense, lemony, limey flavours, fresh, crisp, punchy
and long. Good cellaring potential.

Magic Martinborough - Martinborough Manu
Riesling 2003, a medium sweet with intense citrus flavours; and
one for the cellar.

Martinborough Vineyard Manu Riesling
2003 loves the refrigerator. It's medium-sweet with lovely texture
and weight; beautifully balanced flavours of elmons, honey, flowers,
spice, raisins and just a touch of waxy botrytis.

One of the two very smart riesling (the other is a new one
called Manu) made by Claire Mulholland at this winery best known
for its pinot noir. Appealing varietal aromatics. Good texture
and a vibrant, crisp, lime-driven finish. Off-dry.

Martinborough Vineyard Jackson
Block Riesling
This is one of the jewels of the Martinborough Vineyard range.
Full of promise, the 2003 vintage (êêêê1/2)
is based on 13 year old vines in Bernie and Jane Jackson's vineyard,
just 'around the corner' from the winery. Tight and youthful,
dryish but not austere, it shows good weight and intensity of
delicate grapefruit and lime flavours, with fresh acidity and
a long finish. A top candidate for cellaring.
Martinborough Vineyard Manu Riesling
Already a delicious mouthful, the 2003 vintage (êêêê1/2)
was hand picked from 13 year old vines in the Jackson Block, left
to develop 'a touch' of noble rot. A medium-sweet style (harbouring
28 grams/litre of residual sugar), it has fresh, vibrant passionfruit
and lime flavours, crisp, intense and lingering. Drink now or cellar.

Martinborough Vineyard Jackson Block Riesling
2003 is a crisp, dry and appealing wine from a long dry summer.
It is at first austere, and statistics of 5.5 per cent residual
sugar, a pH of 2.9, residual sweetness of 7g a litre acid and
12 per cent alcohol suggest a firm, dry wine. But it is intensely
and vividly fruity, and after being chilled and left open for
a while, it unfolds to display depth and delicacy, revealing
a herbal tint, with the taut richness of citrus, grapefruit,
lemon and lime and a long, flinty aftertaste.
It is deep and complex for such a young wine, and is quite Germanic
in style. With age to refine its strengths, it will develop these
characteristics even more.

Jackson Block Riesling 2003 is
a fine, taut, racy wine with a steely mineral overtone, hints
of lime, lovely weight, balance and length, and a zingy dry finish
that wakes you up. Lovers of dry Riesling will want to cellar
this, for it will amply repay a few years of careful cellaring.êêêêV+
Manu Riesling 2003 is a late-harvest style with hints of apricot,
lime and tropical fruit. Beautifully balanced, with floral overtones,
intense fruit, a little sweetness and a long, crisp, clean finish,
it is delicious with many sorts of food, even something humble
like roasted root vegetables. êêêêV

Manu Riesling
2003
Medium sweet (28 grams of sugar) and the fruit has some catching
up to do yet it's all here; floral with lines, stone-fruit and
some citrus mandarin. Best in the new year; from March on.

2003 Martinborough
Vineyard Jackson Block Riesling
Focussed, floral aromas; dry and limey in the mouth, with mineral
hints. Well structured, in-tense, sophisticated wine we all thought
would really hit its straps with more time. ****1/2
2003 Martinborough Vineyard Manu Riesling
Clear, floral scents competed with a broader, smudgy aroma which
Stephen described as 'muscaty'. It performed very well in the
mouth - medium sweet, citrusy, racy acids and a long finish. "Delicious
aperitif", noted Christine. êêêê

Martinborough Vineyard 2003 Jackson
Block Riesling 2003. Though Martinborough is best known for its
pinot noirs, it also produces some notable rieslings, and this
is one of them. I think that this lovely floral wine will blossom
over the next few years and the honeysuckle, lime and spice will
combine to produce something rather speciail.
