2002 Chardonnay reviews

Michael Cooper
Classic Wines of New Zealand (2nd ed.) - 2005
****1/2

Pale straw. Yeasty, slightly nutty and earthy bouquet. Slightly more austere than the '03, with good intensity of grapefruit and nut flavours, lots of barrel-stir complexity, a crisp, limey edge and lasting finish.

... looked superb, with a pretty mature feel throughout, and not in slightest bit hampered by its 100% oak dunking (25% new). This is a medium-weight style with braod brush strokes of flavour and a grown up air. Great wine, but don't hang around.

Fragrant, complex and harmonious, with excellent depth, the 2002 vintage (****1/2) is creamy and substantial, slightly minerally and nutty, with ripe, sweet fruit flavours of grapefruit and well integrated, biscuity oak. A tightly structured wine, it shows strong personality.

Martinborough Chardonnay 2002.
With a smoky, toasty oak bouquet and sweet grapefruit and butterscotch flavours. Concentrated and rich. A good cellar wine.

Toni Gillan
Cafe Magazine - Winter 2004

This is 5 star territory, a powerful and rich Chardonnay packed with so much flavour that the tastebuds run amok with joy. If you thought the 2001 was great, then this rates on a par. The balance of fruit and flavour is perfect, and it has just enough oak to add to the interest.

Sometimes, it's worth spending a little extra. In this case, $33 will buy you a Chardonnay of real class. It is a complex amalagam of milky, minerally nougat and hazelnut characters, supported by good acidic structure. A five stars drop.

A Guide to New Zealand Wine - 2004

Nicely strong, leesy, almost old-fashioned Chardonnay, tight and elegant with complex best just edging out and will show best mid-2004 onto 2006. Looks delicious and very rewarding for those not rushing its cork out!

Eye Magazine
Autumn 2004

Light golden colour with lifted fruit and oak. Lemon, limes and mineral characters describe this elegant, finely structured chardonnay. Moderate weight palate with some complexity and a subtle oak finish.
