chardonnay cellar notes

Martinborough Vineyard 2006 Chardonnay
Aromas of stonefruit, popcorn, and biscuit, meld with steely tropical characters on the nose.  The finely tuned palate is layered with vanilla and baked bread, along with our classic Martinborough Vineyard beeswax character. Our winemaking style focuses on producing an elegant, finely balanced, varietal Chardonnay that shows its best with some time in bottle.

Martinborough Vineyard 2001 Chardonnay
‘This is in my view the best wine in the lineup. It shows strong fruit flavour (grapefruit and mineral) with a winemaker influence from oak, yeast and malolactic characters that complements rather than competes with the fruit. A great texture and lingering finish add further appeal.’93 points

Martinborough Vineyard 2000 Chardonnay
‘Still reasonably gutsy and full-flavoured but showing more elegance than some older vintages. A more restrained style that nonetheless reveals plenty of oak, malolactic and yeast lees influence.’ 90 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1999 Chardonnay
‘Chardonnay Full-flavoured and weighty Chardonnay with strong grapefruit, butterscotch flavours and a nutty/bready character that suggests strong yeast lees influence. A bold wine with character. ‘90 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1998 Chardonnay
‘Quite developed Chardonnay with strong buttery, mealy toasty flavours and some "dried fruit" characters that suggest a slight maderised influence. I like the wine's warmth, richness and soft texture ..the buttery malolactic character slightly excessive.’90 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1997 Chardonnay
More developed than the older 1996 and 1995 vintages. A suggestion of honeyed botrytis may have advanced the wine's development. Crisp acidity and a drying finish. 80 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1996 Chardonnay
‘Rich, warming and complex wine with apricot, orange marmalade, vanilla and cashew nut flavours. A bold Chardonnay that is now approaching full maturity. A high level of alcohol (14%) adds weight and richness but .. a slightly hot finish.’93 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1995 Chardonnay
Chardonnay Seamless, mature Chardonnay with integrated flavours that suggest marmite, hazelnut and butterscotch. An attractive texture adds appeal.90 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1994 Chardonnay
Full-flavoured and mature Chardonnay with cashew, baked bread, vegemite and leesy characters. A complex and attractive wine that is now beginning to dry a little on the finish 88 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1993 Chardonnay
‘Quite developed and with some green and leafy characters but not without interest. Certainly at the end of its life .. high acidity but showing some moderately attractive toasty/mealy characters.’83 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1992 Chardonnay
Deep yellow and slightly dull. Toffeeish, maderised. Past best.75 Points

Martinborough Vineyard 1991 Chardonnay
A deliciously complex aroma reveals a gentle array of delicate bottle-aged characters including bran biscuit, toast and clover honey. Lovely wine in fine condition apart from a suggestion of bitterness on the finish. 90 Points

Martinborough Vineyard 1990 Chardonnay
Very developed Chardonnay with interesting nutty, mealy, toasty flavours. This is a "love it or hate it" wine depending on your acceptance of bottle-aged characters. Delicate and complex.88 points

Martinborough Vineyard 1989 Chardonnay
‘Deep yellow. Very developed Chardonnay that though past its best still has weight and an appealing concentration of strong mealy/toasty flavours.. some less desirable wet wool .. characters.’ 80 points
